U & Pizza and Pizza Underground

What: &Pizza
When: March 21, 2014
Where: 1250 U St NW, Washington, DC 20009

In March we had a special Friday night edition of Pizza 'Pinions cause the one and only Macaulay Culkin was in town with his band Pizza Underground and what is a Pizza club if it doesn't go see the premiere Pizza Band of 2014 live?

We chose to pair Macaulay Culkin with U &Pizza, mostly because of proximity to the concert venue and that we haven't started 'pinionating about Jumbo Slice joints yet.

&Pizza is a DC/MD chain of quick but unique pizza joints. They serve a flatbread style pizza, which are just a little bit bigger than personal size. We ended up ordering three, but could probably of handled four just fine.

The Atmosphere is more takeout with not a lot of seating and lots of action. Good for a quick pizza that isn't jumbo slice.

Crust:
Catherine- There was not a true crust on these pizzas because it was more flatbread style. The edge of the flat bread was the perfect size and not too doughy. I loved it!
Becky- Crust was very very light and thin and tasty.
Jenn- I was skeptical about the crust, but it was pretty good thickness and chewiness wise. I like min a little chewy with some crunch.
Courtney- The pizzas are flatbread style. We got one pizza with the wheat crust and two with original. The crust was very thin but sturdy. Not a lot of flavor, but did a good job of transporting the toppings to my mouth.

Sauce:
Jenn- Sauce was good, I especially liked the Fig marsala they used on the Moonstruck.
Courtney- Not memorable
Catherine- I love how it was not chunky and was pretty thin. You new it was there but it did not take over the pizza. It was a perfect marriage with the sauce, toppings and dough. "I do!"

Toppings:
Catherine- As you know I cant handle the spice so, I was excited when the chili oil did not end up on one of the slices on the Moonstruck. Every pizza was delicious so, as a result their toppings were delicious as well. The topping that stood out the most to me was the mushrooms. Cooked perfectly and the right amount of flavor. I will say that one negative is that not all the toppings make every slice of pizza. If you were sharing with someone you may get a slice with just cheese.
Jenn- Toppings were amazing on the Moonstruck, the fig marasala was a nice sweet combination with the mushroom truffle and goat cheese and a kick of red pepper aioli to make it more interesting. The self-made margherita was also pretty good, cherry tomatoes are cute.
Courtney- The pizzas are smaller so we again got three pizzas. Two were off of their specialty menu and the third we constructed ourselves for our Margherita. The toppings on the specialty pizzas were pretty good. Moonstruck had mushrooms and chili oil and was the most flavorful of all of our options. The backyard garden had arugula in a lemon vinegrette on top which was also flavorful. The mozerella/sauce/basil wasn't very flavorful, which made the Margherita the worst choice.

After the pizza we went on the Black Cat to see Pizza Underground. I thought it was amazing, but not all shared the same view. It was over the top pizza. One of the instruments was a pizza box, they played pizza pics in the background, every song was a pizza remake, and their merch table was full of pizza necklaces/totes/and other pizza items. However my favorite part was an interlude of We Didn't Start the Fire. They played a slide show of cats while human cat dancers took the stage.

Its definitely not for a serious music fan, but for someone who loves pizza and taking things to the extreme and then a little beyond. A Pizza Underground show is for you. Oh and if you love Home Alone, its also for you.
